The Joy of Listening

"I love you Mommy, but..." It is always a new surprise in what follows this statement from my littlest one. Sometimes there is information about what her siblings are doing wrong for the day. Other times she may be thirsty or hungry. There are times she follows it by telling me she needs to kiss me. I always enjoy hearing this one.

My children never cease to amaze me on a daily basis. My greatest treasures come from listening to my children talk.

"Mommy I can help take care of things tomorrow." These words from Jasmine came after a week of her doing extra work to help me while I had a foot injury.

Tonight as Keanu was getting ready for bed he asked me if 8:30am would work for him to serve me breakfast in bed. "I don't know why I want to help you so much Mommy, but I do."

"Mommy can I tell you a secret?" Then as I bend down the softest littlest voice in my ear goes. "I love you Mommy forever." Emma has the power to melt hearts.

I feel very loved tonight.

Sitting on Couch Dreaming of Running

I am laying on the couch my foot elevated and my last pain killer for the day wore off hours ago. I suppose there is no point in whining even though I could be really good at it right now.

My last run was on Sunday February 7th. I was on a 3 1/2 mile run when my ankle began to bother me. I kept pushing through thinking it would work itself out. I was almost home when a stabbing pain in my right foot brought me to a walk. By the time I reached the parking lot the pain had increased and Jessi had to help me into the house. Monday I was in the doctors where I was referred on to a Podiatrist. X-rays were taken and the final diagnoses was serious bruising and swelling in the muscle and bones in foot from overuse. My arches in both feet are collapsing and my right in danger of breaking again. Fun, fun. I was given a huge, heavy boot that I have to wear if I am on my feet and anti-inflammatories.

Despite the fact that I have been mostly careful about staying off it, things do not seem to be improving. The pain has been increasing and the pain killers are not doing a very good job of taking care of things.

The doctor took a mold of my feet and has ordered custom orthotics. He believes I will be able to run after we can get things calmed down and work with helping ease pressure off of them. I see him again in 3 weeks.

Matt has a 3 day weekend and has grounded me to the couch. I am grateful that he cares about me so much. The Olympics have been helping me not get too bored. Keanu and I are also trying to make it through all six movies on Star Wars Lego Wii. My kids are amazing and take such good care of me. They get me anything I ask for from food and drink down to making beds for me and helping put my boot on when I get up.

I am hoping for a less painful nights sleep tonight.

Training Update

I am proud to say that I am still running at the end of week 2. A couple days ago I was even able to run 3.25 miles without having to take a break and walk. We did have to stop and wait for a light to cross a main road. I was able average around a 12 minute mile which is the fastest I have been able to do so far. I was very happy with that run.

A typical weeks schedule looks something like this. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays are run days with long runs on Wednesday and Saturday. Monday and Friday's are rest days and Thursday is cross-training. Seems like a lot written down but it hasn't been that bad to keep up with.

My first race is a 5K on February 13. I am looking forward to this even though I might get a little nervous as it gets closer. Scary to think this will be the shortest race of the year. I guess I had better enjoy it.

Matt continues to be an amazing coach. It has been fun running with him. He is extremely patient with me and always knows how to encourage me if I get down or frustrated.

On to week 3.

Why Do I Want to Run a Marathon?

This question must be answered and so here it goes. I want to push myself past all the limits I think I have and be able to look back and see that I am as strong as I have always wanted to be. At this time the thought of running 26.2 miles seems like a dream but I am excited to see how that dream slowly becomes a reality.

The reason I will be able to do this comes in one word, Matt. He is my coach and my biggest fan. He has set up my running schedule and has it emailed to me everyday. He watches the kids so I can run and is always ready to listen about all my issues even down to the silly ones.

So far I have run 4 days with a total of 10 miles. Yeah! The good news is I am still excited and I even ran in the rain one day.
